Beckum, 7. December 2006. The Hermes Logistik Group, Germany's largest consumer logistics company independent of the postal system ships almost everything from letters and packages to furniture. Constantly rising order levels last year led to an increase in turnover by about 11 percent. The company has reacted to that by building a new distribution centre in Hückelhoven near Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia. What by now is the sixth main transloading base or hub is set to create a new basis for future growth. On about 11,250 square metres from September 2007 on outgoing shipments (including those of the TV shopping broadcaster QVC) will be sorted, loaded and sent on their way to Hermes distribution depots and further destinations.
About 12,000 customer shipments per hour are provided for. In the process, cartons, bags and small items of varying sizes of paper, foil, cardboard and plastic are redistributed.
BEUMER Maschinenfabrik GmbH of Beckum was commissioned by the Hermes Logistik Group to provide conveyor technology. For more than 30 years the internationally active family-owned company has supplied distribution and sorting systems for the courier, express and parcel sector. Here a high degree of availability, precision and efficiency have been characteristic of the systems from the BEUMER Group for that sector. With the future use of two high-powered sorting systems for packages of the BS 25 E Tray type and a BS 7 Belt Tray small item sorter all quantity flows of marketing partners and private customers are to be merged and sorted. Identification of the shipments is accomplished with the latest barcode reading technology and integrated quantity registration.
Besides the quality of the systems and the concomitant efficiency enhancement the Hermes Logistik Group lays special stress on high availability. After all, the sorting centre is to be put into at least 20 hours of service in multi-shift operations. In order to eliminate down time in advance all essential parts of the system possess redundancies.
Besides technical customisation and installation of the sorters BEUMER is also carrying out individual software production for this project. In that way the company from Beckum is ensuring rapid commissioning in September 2007.
